The Job

The Child & Family Counsellor will work closely with children, young people, and families impacted by trauma, providing therapeutic counselling within a team focused on child-centred, trauma-informed care. This role is integral to the prevention and support efforts for those affected by sexual abuse, operating within a collaborative framework to ensure effective interventions and support.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver therapeutic interventions for children and families affected by trauma, with children as the primary clients.
  • Facilitate individual and group counselling sessions, focused on building resilience and addressing behavioural impacts of trauma.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential case files and reports, and ensure program outcomes are met.
  • Develop and sustain partnerships with community agencies and stakeholders, promoting a coordinated approach to support.
  • Conduct community workshops to raise awareness and prevention strategies around sexual abuse and violence.

Essential Criteria

  • Qualifications: Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling, or related field allowing for membership in a relevant professional association.
  • Experience: Demonstrated experience working with at-risk children and families, particularly within Indigenous communities and using therapeutic frameworks suited to First Nations people.
  • Skills: Strong case management skills, ability to lead small group therapy, and competence in both crisis and long-term interventions.
  • Other Requirements: Unrestricted driver’s licence, Working with Children Check, and National Police Check
